The College of Scent Dogs

Our blog posts are ‘scentered’ around all aspects of canine nosework. We hope you enjoy reading them.

Hello there! It's great to have you here on our Blog. As you may already know, our expertise is pet dog scentwork. But I'd also like to let you know that The College of Scent Dogs has much more to offer.

To begin with, let's refer to these blog posts as our chats. Here, we'll share helpful information about scent dog training, offer tips and tricks based on our methods, provide details about our equipment, and review some noteworthy books and academic papers that can help build our pet dog scentwork portfolio.

As a proud Evidence-Based scent detection training establishment, The College of Scent Dogs often discusses this topic. But what does it mean? To kick off our series, I want to share my writings (from my Doctorate) and present our evidence.

Our evidence-based practice combines successful practical experience that’s over 60 years of operational search dog handling experience (Not just me it’s 30 years each), systematic research (My Doctorate), and actual ‘sniffer-dog’ training skills. This involves using academic research and practical expertise, which experienced practitioners apply (Our instructors). Our trainers bring their wealth of experience to our scentwork training process while owners and students discuss their values, ethics, and beliefs in pursuing their training goals. At The College, we take pride in assisting our candidates in achieving these training objectives.

The best way to achieve successful canine training is through evidence-based practice, which combines education, experience, and expertise. This approach involves using relevant research and instructional skills to improve dog training, whether for scentwork, tracking or any other aspect of canine nosework. This is achieved by avoiding misinformation, hierarchical bias, and poor working practices, as our evidence-based practice helps promote better training. It also provides conceptual information improving scent detection training methods; we aim to change attitudes towards their established training beliefs.

This is what we are all about! So together, let’s enjoy the ‘Chats’, share some knowledge, improve our scent dog training, and do the dog training your dog will love!
