One Course, three supported phases

Welcome to our Assured City & Guilds Scent Detection Programme - one of the most comprehensive programmes available! Our programme is divided into three phases, and we provide unwavering support at every step of your journey. Regardless of your experience level, our training is customised to meet your needs and those of your dog, where you do the training your dog will love.

Our approach to scent dog training results from Rob’s award-winning book and his Doctorate in Scent Dog Training, adding over 50 years of proven operational Police Search Dog experience from Rob and Karen's service with London's Metropolitan Police. We assure you that your training experience will be exciting, enjoyable, and fun. Get ready to embark on this journey with us!

Don’t worry if you're a novice or a seasoned expert; we can cater to all levels of development and learning. For example, during our recent course, the participants ranged from complete beginners to those with 25 years of experience as operational Police Search Dog Handlers! We strongly believe in providing "Scent Training for Every Dog" regardless of their background or proficiency level.

Scent Detection Programme Outline

Week One: During the first week, you will learn the process of training your dog in scent detection, from conditioning a positive emotional response to the odour through to more advanced searching. You will discover many different techniques, as we believe that ‘One size does not fit all’, particularly in scent detection training.

Week Two: This week is focused on assessments and consists of three days of learning systematic search techniques and valuable revision. The last two days of the week will be dedicated to scenario-based assessments. Please do not worry; there is a planned gap between the first and second weeks to ensure your training goes smoothly. Remember, this is a fully supported programme, and we are available to assist you throughout your journey.

Week Three: During Instructor Week, you will receive training that will help you design and develop your own scent detection course. The lessons will cover various topics, including adult learning theories, classroom skills, and creating a safe learning environment for both dogs and humans. You will also continue with practical training to develop both your dog-handling skills and training knowledge.
